Until I hear it from you…

Sorry for the lack of updates the past few days. Things have been crazy with work and with me just in general. I went to the doctor the other day and got some blood work done. I think I talked about it on here, thinking my thyroid was acting up. Well it all came back normal. Now I think I might possibly have Lupus like my mom, so who knows. I have all the symptoms.

Right now I’m watching “Empire Records” because I just got home from work. I had a concert to shoot tonight (REO Speedwagon and Styx – late 70′s / 80′s rock bands for those that don’t know). I’m completely zoned out.

But I wanted to update because of something today. There was a video posted on a message board that I frequent. (Click here to see the video.

Basically, a fan asks Brian what he thinks about fan fiction. He goes off and basically this is said:

Fan: What do you think about fans who fantasize about you? And do you ever read fanfics?
Brian: Do I ever read what?
Fan: Fanfics.
Brian: Fanfics… uummm… no I haven’t read fanfics.
Fan: Fan fictions? Stories about fans. And you guys. *giggle* And some of them are real hot. *giggle*
Brian: uumm. I don’t know, I guess fantasizing about one of the Boys is something that’s like a warning for (undecernable) sometime. *shrugs* I mean, to each his own, I’m not sure why they’re broadcasting their fantasies. But umm, y’know I think when those fantasies get out of hand there’s problems. *forced cheesy grin* I’m actually, I’m actually dealing with a stalker sit..situation from Venezuela right now.

It probably shouldn’t, but this shit pisses me off. Just because someone writes stories that are FICTIONAL, they should worry? It pisses me off because it seems as if anybody who is involved with fan fiction should be considered crazy. I’m probably one of the most normal fans they freakin’ have. I don’t follow them from town to town (sure, I’m going to three shows this tour but dammit, I have never done anything like that before and I have the week off for vacation!). I don’t go to every single event that they have. I’m not going on some freakin’ cruise to be near them.

So where does Brian get off saying that I’m weird for writing fan fiction? I love to write fiction. I love the Backstreet Boys. It’s no different than owning some fan site that has to be updated daily and consumes someone’s life. For fuck’s sake, writing fan fiction lead me to my career as a journalists.

What are your thoughts on this?

I’ll update “Superstar” Sunday, I promise :)

Speaking as someone who also writes fanfiction, I think a) Brian has a right to be creeped out b) he would be even more creeped out had he read any of it c) he’s being unfair when he describes fanfiction as “broadcasting your fantasies” and d) there is plenty of fanfiction out there, some of yours included, that i read because it is GOOD WRITING. The fact that the Boys are in it is secondary.

So he obviously just has no idea what fanfic is, and I think if he read some about one of his own interests that maybe he would understand better. Also, the way the girl asks makes it sound like every fanfic is a visual fantasy; I don’t think he has any idea that a lot of people are more focused on the writing itself, the character development; not just the fact that its a fantasy story involving the guys.

So I think if he knew it better, he would have a different reaction. Either way though, his words were still a bit extreme. Not every fan is crazy. His stalker is probably one in a million, no lyrical pun intended.)

Just because you write fanfic DOES NOT mean you are a stalker. It is a form of flattery. And for him to say he has never read it is bs. All of them have read it,

    Hi Karah,
Here is my two cents on this rather heavy subjects. There are people who love to write and want to improve their writing and they just use the guys to have some material. They are not writing about the REAL guys. Sometimes they write to let out their emotions or to give a tv-show a different ending. So if you’re writing fanfiction for ‘healthy’ reasons just like you and I have. I don’t think fanfiction writers are weird. For example, I wrote a Christmas-story for a writers contest and used the guys as for the characters because of the lack of inspiration. My family and my whole enviroment loved the story and won that competition. My point is, when you have a story in your mind but can’t find the characters, it’s okay to ‘use’ the guys.
Just as long as you don’t start to believe that one of the guys could be like that in real life, all is fine.
The sad thing is that there always will be freaks in the world.
Brian only has seen one side of the fanfiction world, so it’s not fair of him to say that ALL fanficwriters are crazy, but I do understand that it’s the fear of the stalker that makes him think like that.
Pfew, I have really tried to make my point clear in a language that is not my own. So I hope it’s clear for everyone what I mean.
    Love, Pauline.
